Why You Cannot Boost Your Immune System
Better health is central to human happiness and well-being. It also makes an important contribution to economic progress.
Without good health our bodies lack the energy and enthusiasm needed to do the things we love most. Bob Dylan puts it so eloquently - “A person is a success if they get up in the morning and get to bed and night, and in between, they are able to do what they want to do”. I love it! This is what the culmination of health in all its’ spheres bring us - freedom to be who we desire to be!!
As sickness continues to impact peoples’ health, livelihood and wellbeing - our hearts go out to all affected and our impulse to up the anti on our own immunity is risen.
How can you improve your immune system? On the whole, your immune system does a remarkable job of defending you against disease-causing microorganisms. But sometimes it fails: A germ invades successfully and makes you sick. Is it possible to intervene in this process and boost your immune system? What if you improve your diet? Take certain vitamins or herbal preparations? Make other lifestyle changes in the hope of producing a near-perfect immune response?
The concept of boosting immunity just doesn’t add up scientifically for me. Attempting to boost the cells of your immune system is especially complicated because there are so many different kinds of cells in the immune system that respond to so many different microbes in so many ways. Which cells should you boost, and to what number? So far, I don’t believe we know the answer. What is known is that the body is continually generating immune cells. Certainly it produces many more lymphocytes than it can possibly use. The extra cells remove themselves through a natural process of cell death called apoptosis — some before they see any action, some after the battle is won. No one knows how many cells or what the best mix of cells the immune system needs to function at its optimum level.
What we do not want to do is over-excite the immune system in such that we move away from health. Just as if a new gym goer suddenly goes all out with multiple workouts on the first day of training. It is a given that will trend backwards in both health and fitness, before moving forward. They will also open themselves up for injury and a weakened body in the short term. Ultimately they will put more strain and stress on their body, rather than a gain in overall health.
A healthy immune system can defeat invading pathogens. And the way to a healthy functioning immune system is not through multiple new supplements but through an educated or continued evolving shift towards multi-faceted and synergistic lifestyle habits. It becomes so clear in times such as this, where we are faced with a possible epidemic that we all need to be continually working on our health so that we are individuals, capable of resisting the impact of viral contagions.
Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these:
Be aware of stressors, both environmental and mental and work in strategies to become stress tolerant.
Individual Nutrition - Get intimate with your body and what benefits you
Energy - Aim for movement across the day, inquire into your energy on waking and between meals
Maintain a healthy weight. Weight can be an intelligent and yet gentle wake up call. (I’ll post a deeper understanding of this next week).
Digestions - Inquire into both the digestion and absorption of your foods. You may be eating expensive and beautifully healthy foods but if your not absorbing and assimilating - they won’t be making the difference in energy and health that they should be.
Yin - Get in touch with your recovery. Looking into your sleep as a guide to adequate recovery.
The issue for most people is that they don’t know how to live a conscious life in the above areas. There is too much information and no framework for living consciously. Information is everywhere but is consumed in an unstructured and isolated way, which leads to more confusion. This falls short of a blue print for living with fire and liveliness and a bullet-proof immune!
